Watching In A New Way
There is something I absolutely love almost as much as books (ok, not quite as much, but a very close second). MOVIES!! A good story in movie form can really change things for me. I can be in the worst mood ever, sit down and watch a good movie, and come out of that experience changed. Anyone with me? But lately, movies have taken on an altogether new meaning for me as my relationship with God has grown and I began to realize that His Love is quite literally CHASING me. I began to sit through movies with the expectation and openness that perhaps God had a message for me in it. Now it just so happens that oftentimes, the movies I am watching are children's movies (seriously...Rough Night is just not appropriate for my little people) and I cannot help but find Him in them.
One of my absolute favorite children's movies is The Croods. I remember the first time I saw it (yes, I have watched it many times) I had no idea what it was about and was just looking for something to do with my kids. When we left the theater, my heart was overflowing and I was in tears!!!! I absolutely LOVED it because of the dad in it. He is strong, protective, seriously loves his family and is really funny (we all know how much I love to laugh!). He reminds me so much of my own dad who I absolutely ADORE and has been one of the greatest influences in my life! But I love this movie even more because of what God shared with me as I watched.
The movie starts with the cavemen Croods family living their lives in the typical prehistoric way. They're doing what has always been done because it is safe. Living in fear and hiding was the norm. But the daughter has this knowing that there is something more, and wants desperately to find it. One night she takes a risk and goes out of the safe cave. Outside, she encounters someone she has never met who is holding light (fire) and promises there is more and something better out there. He invites her to find it with him but let's her know it is her choice. This scene is hilarious!! She ends up convincing her family to go with her, while Guy (the person she encountered) leads them to something new. Then a hilarious, beautiful, messy journey ensues.
Reflection Of Truth
I can so relate to this movie! I am the daughter so often stuck in the cave because of fear and tradition. I have thoughts like, it's not safe to try something different, or this is the way it's always been done, or that's too risky. There's a constant nagging reminder to just stay where I am because it's safe. But in my heart, I really feel there is something more. The problem is that I have no idea how to find it. The wanting grows so I decide to take a risk, try something different, or simply open my heart and mind.
There have been so many people in my life who have shared the light or held it for me as a beacon, but none more than Jesus. He is the "Guy." Upon meeting Him I didn't recognize Him. He looked different than ANYTHING anyone had ever told me (yes, even what I heard in church!) but I knew there was something He had that I needed. And He has more to show me, but I have to choose to go with Him to find it. Just like the Croods, I decided to go on the journey with Him, and just like them, I make TONS of mistakes along the way. But He never gives up on me and each step we take is one step closer to the "more" I have longed for in the deepest depths of my soul.
Try It And See
I won't tell you how the movie ends so you can find out on your own. Take a couple of hours and check it out. Go into it asking God what He wants to share with you and see what He says. We would love to hear from you in the comments below to find out about your experiences. We'd also love to hear if there's a movie that you love that God has used in your life. Check out this week's vlog and hear about another one of my favorites!
The truth is that God's beauty and love are EVERYWHERE and chasing us every moment of everyday - even when we go to the movies. All we have to do is be willing to see Him. Why not watch your next movie with that perspective?
