Books! Books! And More Books!
A couple of nights ago I was wandering the aisles of Target with my sister-in-law. We had a few moments before we needed to be at our book club meeting. We headed to the book section to look for the book our team is currently reading, Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist.
When we arrived and started looking at the shelves, I kept blurting out, "Oooh I read that book! It was so good! Oooh and that one too," over and over again (especially in the Young Adult section - don't judge!). I couldn't hold back my excitement! As I became aware that I was speaking out loud, I got a little embarrassed and then a LOT grateful because I realized it was my trusted sister with me and she'd love me regardless of my book addiction. The truth is books are my jam. I LOVE a great story (especially a love story), a practical parenting book, something that gets me laughing out loud, and any and everything that brings me closer to God (including *gasp* non-Christian books that I filter through the Holy Spirit). So many revelations, so much growth, dear friendships, and considerable changes have developed in my life as the result of reading a good book - even more when I talk about it with others. In fact, The Chase Is Real started as a book club in my living room!
In Matthew 19:14 Jesus tells us "God's kingdom belongs to people who are like children." One thing every little child has is an inherent understanding that they don't know everything. They have this beautiful desire to learn. How many frustrated sighs have we parents uttered at the question "But why?" Jesus tells us that is something NECESSARY to be a part of the kingdom of God. But often, as adults, don't we think we "know" the answers? How many of us have lost that curiosity, wonder, and desire to learn that we once possessed?
It's Never Too Late
I say let's get it back! Let's spend time learning and wondering and thinking and questioning. Let's invite God in and ask Him to teach us. Let's share with each other our great lessons and the places we found them. Let's open ourselves to thinking in new ways and to knowing that the closer we get to God, the more we have to discover.
There are many ways to accomplish this. Books, movies, and music are some of my favorite ways. Over the next five weeks we are going to share some of our favorites with you. This first week we are going to talk about books that changed our lives. You know that book that you read with a constantly nodding head, tears rolling down your cheeks, and that soul knowing that you'd never be the same again? Many of us have had that experience (don't worry if you haven't! Try one of the books/movies/songs we recommend in this series and see what happens) and we are so excited to share ours with you!
What About You?
More than just telling you about our stories, we'd love to hear YOURS (yes, this is a bit sneakily selfish because we actually want some recommendations for a good read...lol). What's that one book you can look back on as having been a turning point? Or that song that just changed everything? Or that movie you saw that made you think in a way that you hadn't before? Check out this week's vlog (at the top!) to find out what mine is and the blogs that will come out later this week. Let's learn together and see what God has for us!!
