The Dreaded Hour
I don't know about you, but homework time in our house is...well, let's just say a place you don't want to be at around 5PM. There is frustration, irritation, and exasperation. I find myself saying again and again, "I passed the fifth grade. In fact, I even went onto middle school and high school. Get ready for this shocking news: I even graduated college! I've done some homework in my time and I might be able to share some tips with you." The response I get EVERY SINGLE TIME is, "You don't know how to do this. It's different for us. You can't understand!" Looks then furiously pass between my husband and me as we wordlessly communicate whether we throw them all out or keep at this thing called parenting.
I Am Just Like My Kids
I can't help but wonder if this is how God often feels about us. In John 10:10, Jesus tells us He has come to give us life, better than we dreamed of life. In fact, He both lived and died to teach us exactly how to experience this life. AND He is constantly reaching out to us in our day-to-day, moment by moment trying to help us find it (Psalm 23:6). But so often we are like my kids - completely unreceptive.
God 100% wants to grow you through what you go through. He wants to plant His truth and love in your life and allow it to heal, transform, create newness in you. Just like one hopes for their own children, He longs for you to live abundantly. He longs to teach you so that you might experience this "better than you dreamed of" life He came to give you. But in order to grow, you have to listen to His truth and teaching and put it into practice. If that's not something you are in the habit of doing, this can seem daunting. Like something that works for other people but not you. Impossible even. How exactly are you supposed to hear this invisible God SPEAK and TEACH?
How Do You Hear God?
In each of our lives it will probably sound and look a bit different. Just like each of our children are unique and learn a bit differently, so do we. I have found that He speaks WHERE I AM and in what I love. I hear Him through the people He's placed in my life (ever get a text at just the right time?!?!), often through music, in movies and books, and even on TV! Where you are, He is, and He is speaking. I have found it's more about me tuning in, paying attention, and being receptive to His message.
Try it this week! In your everyday ordinary reality, be open to God's message for you. Try our tools to help! Take time to listen to the songs of the week. Start each day remembering He is your good, good Father and LOVES you more than you can begin to understand. Allow Him to plant His light in your life. Do the meditation (find it on our What's New page!). Throughout your day, ask Him and listen for what truth He wants to teach you to help you grow right now. Take a bold step and start reading the Bible (don't worry if you don't have one! Check out biblegateway.com and the vlog above to learn how to access it freely and easily). He's literally written out all the lessons you need. Read a bit everyday this week, ask Him to speak, and notice what happens throughout your day. We would love to have you share your findings by joining the conversation on Facebook through our public page or in our private group!
