Last weekend we took a short road trip with the kids to visit our family. As soon as we got in the car, we heard...
"It's too hot in here!"
"It's too cold in here!"
"My movie screen is too dark."
"Why does the sun always have to shine on me?!"
(YUP! That one really happened.)
"She is so annoying!!!"
"Her singing is too loud!"
And on and on and on....
The complaints poured forth from the mouths of our babes. Those were quickly followed by my husband and I complaining about how much our kids complained!! Of course by the end of the car ride, we were all MISERABLE!
The habit of complaining is one that absolutely steals our joy, our peace, and our love. It quickly (we're talking milliseconds here!) takes our focus from the beauty and love of our great God, and diverts it. As we think about all of the things we are "unhappy" about, we find ourselves angry, frustrated, annoyed and completely closed off to all the miracles God has for us. And we wonder why we are so depressed.
One of my favorite authors, Marianne Williamson, writes, "We can always choose to perceive things differently. We can focus on what's wrong in our life, or we can focus on what's right." Such truth! You see, complaining is just a habit. It's one we've gotten into and it can seem so hard to break. But just like Williamson says, we always have a choice. In every moment we can choose to see all the wonder available to us...or not. Sounds easy, right? But it can seem impossible because we've practiced the habit of complaining for such a long time. Trust me, I know (just watch the video above). So this week, we are going to continue putting into practice our new series' challenge. First, notice when you are complaining. Open yourself up in that moment and invite God in. Welcome Him into your heart, your mind, your circumstances, and ask Him what He is thinking about it all. Then, really listen! He will help you to see where the shift in focus needs to be.
We are just like you, and we recognize that although this is a simple shift in perspective that we're talking about, it's not easy! That's why we like to reference some helpful "tools" that we can use to assist us during this spiritual Spring Cleaning that we're doing. You, too, can check out this week's song to help redirect your outlook on your circumstances. Try starting your day on the right foot with the meditation. If you're not a morning person and can barely turn your brain on before your first cup of coffee (we get it), try the meditation before dozing off to sleep. Do you like to change things up on your smart phone's background? Why not make this week's bible verse your phone's wallpaper? And, new to The Chase is Real, is our private Facebook group: The Chase Connect. This is an amazing forum where you can come to dig deeper, be encouraged, feel supported, prayed for, and feel inspired.
And know, that as difficult as all this cleaning-out-your-junk can be, our great God is with you every step of the way.
