I belong to an incredible women's group at my church. It's literally been life-changing for me. Occasionally, we get presented with a sort of challenge for the week. One of them was to pay special attention to the songs we hear on the radio. We were encouraged to listen with a different perspective that particular week - to try and listen to them as if we were singing to Jesus, or as if He was singing to us. I continue to put this into practice when I listen to anything on the radio these days, and it has proven to be so powerful for me! It has seriously opened my eyes to His grace and love in a whole new way. It's also made me wonder if many mainstream songs were actually written with our Creator in mind. Recently, a song popped up on one of my Pandora channels, and it stopped me in my tracks. I couldn't help but think it was a perfect dialogue with God. The lyrics spoke truth. The song was "This is Why I Need You" by Jesse Ruben.
Here are some of the lyrics:
I have too many questions, and places to go
There are too many options, far too many unknowns
This is why I need you
Everyone talks now, but no one is right
there are too many armies, with no one to fight
This is why I need you
Cause you make the darkness less dark
You make the edges less sharp
You make the winter feel warmer
You make my weakness less weak
You make the bottom less deep
You make the waiting feel shorter
You make my crazy feel normal, every time
You are the who, love is the what, and this is the why
You seriously need to listen to the whole song here. Just close your eyes, crank up the volume, and let the words soak in.
I'm reminded that whatever the stressor, whatever the situation, whatever the problem, God is capable of so much greatness. He is the one to turn to in those moments where we don't know which road to take. He shines light where there is darkness in our lives. He makes the sharp edges of our circumstances feel more bearable. He is there to warm our souls, to strengthen us, to help us soar. He encourages us to climb those mountains and wants us to banish doubt (whether in ourselves or in Him) from our minds. He loves us - all the crazy, all the quirkiness, all the shiny and rusty parts - all of it. And He loves in a way that no other person can.
Has this ever happened to you? Have the lyrics of a song stopped you in your tracks because you thought that the message was specifically for you? We would love to hear about it in the comments below or on Facebook.
